Video Conversion Guide for YouTube Creators

What format should you upload to YouTube? How do you convert footage from different cameras? Here is the practical guide for content creators.

YouTube accepts a huge range of video formats, but not all formats are created equal when it comes to upload speed, processing time, and final quality on the platform. Here is what you need to know.

What YouTube Actually Recommends

YouTube's official recommendation is:

  • Container: MP4
  • Video codec: H.264
  • Audio codec: AAC-LC
  • Frame rate: Match your source (24, 25, 30, 48, 50, or 60 fps)
  • Resolution: 1080p minimum, 4K if you have it

If you upload in this format, YouTube processes your video fastest and produces the best quality re-encoded versions for streaming.

Common Scenarios

Your Camera Shoots MOV

If you use a Canon, Sony, or Fuji camera that outputs MOV files, converting to MP4 is usually lossless because the codecs inside are already H.264. The conversion takes seconds and the output is identical quality.

Your Screen Recorder Outputs MKV

OBS Studio and other screen recorders default to MKV because it is more crash-resistant during recording. YouTube does accept MKV, but MP4 processes faster. Convert MKV to MP4 before uploading for quicker processing.

You Have Old AVI or WMV Footage

Legacy formats need re-encoding, which takes longer but produces a much better file for upload. Convert AVI to MP4 or convert WMV to MP4 to modernize your footage.

Audio Extraction for Podcasts

If you record video podcasts and also distribute as audio-only, you need to extract the audio track. Convert MP4 to MP3 for podcast distribution on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, and other platforms.

Thumbnail Optimization

YouTube thumbnails should be 1280x720 pixels in JPG or PNG. If your design tool exports WebP, convert to JPG before uploading. YouTube does not accept WebP thumbnails.
