The Best File Conversion Workflow for Photographers

RAW to JPEG, HEIC to TIFF, PNG to WebP. Here is how photographers should handle format conversion across their entire workflow.

As a photographer, you deal with more file formats than almost anyone. Your camera shoots RAW (CR2, CR3, NEF, ARW, DNG). Your clients want JPEG. Your print lab needs TIFF. Your website needs WebP. Your portfolio needs high-quality PNG. And if you shoot on iPhone for behind-the-scenes content, you have HEIC files thrown into the mix too.

The RAW Conversion Pipeline

RAW files are your digital negatives. They contain unprocessed sensor data with maximum quality and flexibility. The typical workflow looks like this:

  1. Import RAW files from camera to computer
  2. Edit in Lightroom, Capture One, or DarkTable with full RAW adjustments
  3. Export edited versions in the format needed for each destination

For step 3, you usually export from your editor. But what about when you need to convert files outside your editor? Maybe you have legacy RAW files that your current software does not support, or you need to batch convert thousands of JPEGs to WebP for a website migration.

Common Photographer Conversions

Batch Converting for Clients

Client deliveries often involve converting hundreds of images at once. Filoshi handles batch conversion natively. Drop your entire export folder in, pick the target format and quality settings, and let it run through everything using all your CPU cores. Way faster than re-exporting from Lightroom when you just need a format change.

Metadata Matters

One thing photographers care deeply about is EXIF metadata. Your camera model, lens information, exposure settings, copyright notice, and GPS coordinates are embedded in every photo. Make sure your converter preserves this data. Filoshi uses ImageMagick under the hood, which keeps metadata intact by default.
