How to Convert WebP to PNG (So You Can Actually Use the Image)

Downloaded an image and it is a WebP file? Here is how to convert it to PNG so you can edit it, print it, or use it anywhere.

You right-click an image from a website, hit "Save Image As," and it downloads as a .webp file. You try to open it in your photo editor. It does not work. You try to upload it somewhere else. Rejected. You try to insert it into a Word document. Nope.

Sound familiar? You are not alone. WebP is everywhere on the web now because Google designed it to be smaller than JPEG and PNG, but plenty of software still does not support it.

Why Websites Use WebP

WebP files are typically 25 to 35 percent smaller than equivalent JPEG or PNG files. For websites serving millions of images per day, that translates to massive bandwidth savings. Google, Facebook, Instagram, and most modern websites now serve images in WebP by default.

The format itself is actually great. The problem is that older desktop software, many print workflows, and some apps simply do not recognize it yet.

Converting WebP to PNG

PNG is the safest choice for conversion because:

  • It preserves transparency (WebP can have transparent backgrounds)
  • It is lossless, so no quality is lost during conversion
  • Every piece of software on earth supports PNG

The Filoshi desktop app handles WebP to PNG conversion using ImageMagick, which preserves all image data including transparency channels. Just drop your WebP files in, select PNG as output, and convert.

Should You Convert to JPG Instead?

If the image is a photograph and you do not need transparency, JPG will give you a smaller file. But if the image has any transparent areas (logos, graphics, screenshots), stick with PNG or you will lose that transparency.

Bulk Converting WebP Images

If you have saved a bunch of images from websites and they are all WebP, Filoshi can batch convert the entire folder at once. Drag the folder in, pick PNG, and let it run. Each file gets converted independently, so if one has transparency and another does not, both come out correctly.
