How to Convert FLAC to MP3 for Portable Listening

FLAC files sound incredible because they are lossless. Every bit of the original audio is preserved. But they are also huge. A typical 4-minute song in FLAC takes up 30 to 50 MB, compared to 8 to 10 MB for the same song in MP3. If you are trying to fit your music library on a phone with limited storage, that difference adds up fast.

What You Lose (and What You Do Not)

Converting FLAC to MP3 is a lossy process. The MP3 encoder analyzes the audio and removes frequencies that most humans cannot hear. At 320kbps (the highest standard MP3 bitrate), the difference between FLAC and MP3 is virtually inaudible to the vast majority of listeners, even on good headphones.

Here is a rough guide for choosing your MP3 bitrate:

• 320kbps: Best quality. Use this if storage is not a concern. Most people cannot distinguish this from the FLAC original
• 256kbps: Excellent quality. Good balance of size and quality
• 192kbps: Good quality. Fine for casual listening and podcasts

A Better Alternative: Consider AAC

If your device supports it (iPhones, most modern Android phones, and all computers do), converting to AAC (.m4a) instead of MP3 gives you noticeably better quality at the same file size.
